Claude for Finance

Claude for Finance Teams Training

A hands-on programme for CFO offices, FP&A analysts and controllers who want Claude doing real finance work: month-end variance commentary, board-pack drafting, GST and VAT reconciliations and Excel analysis, built on exports from Tally, Zoho Books or SAP rather than toy datasets.

Overview

What finance teams actually use Claude for

Most finance functions do not need another demo of a chatbot writing a poem. They need the trial balance explained before the Monday review, a draft of the variance note that the CFO can edit rather than write, and a second pair of eyes on a reconciliation that refuses to tie. This programme is built around those jobs.

We work from the reports your team already produces. An Indian group might bring a Tally or SAP trial balance prepared under Ind AS, plus a GSTR-2B download to match against the purchase register. A Dubai or Riyadh subsidiary might bring a Zoho Books ledger, a 5% UAE VAT return workings file or a 15% Saudi VAT summary alongside ZATCA e-invoicing data. Where a group reports under IFRS at parent level and Ind AS locally, we use Claude to draft bridging notes and flag line items that need a human accounting judgement.

Cowork for the close

Claude Cowork, the agentic mode in the Claude desktop app, can be pointed at a close folder: actuals, budget, prior-month commentary. It plans the task, builds a variance workbook and drafts commentary explaining movements above a threshold you set. Analysts then check every number against source before anything leaves the team.

  • Controls first: what data can go into Claude, which plan, who approves outputs
  • Prompting with accounting context: entity, standard, period, materiality
  • Verification habits: tie-outs, recalculation, and asking Claude to show its working

The day ends with each participant holding a working prompt library and at least one month-end task they can hand to Claude the following week.

Highlights

What your finance team leaves with

Variance commentary drafts

Turn actual-versus-budget tables into first-draft management commentary that analysts edit, rather than write from a blank page.

Excel work with Claude

Build formulas, clean messy ledger exports and structure pivot-style summaries using Claude inside Excel and through Cowork.

GST and VAT reconciliation

Match GSTR-2B against purchase registers, or UAE and Saudi VAT workings against ledgers, and list exceptions for review.

Ind AS and IFRS support

Draft accounting policy summaries and Ind AS to IFRS bridging notes, with every conclusion checked by a qualified reviewer.

Verification discipline

Tie-out routines, recalculation checks and source referencing so Claude’s numbers are never trusted without proof.

Reusable prompt library

A finance-specific set of prompts and Skills for close, forecasting, board packs and audit queries, saved for the whole team.

In your workflow

A month-end close with Claude in the loop

On working day three, an FP&A analyst drops the SAP actuals export, the budget file and last month’s commentary into a Cowork folder. Claude reconciles the totals to the trial balance, builds a variance workbook by cost centre, and drafts commentary for every movement above five per cent. The analyst checks each figure, adjusts the wording and sends a clean draft to the controller before lunch.

Use it for

Finance use cases we build in the session

Rolling forecast refresh

Update a driver-based forecast with the latest actuals and get Claude to explain which assumptions moved the outcome most.

Board pack narrative

Draft the financial highlights section of a board or audit committee pack from approved numbers and last quarter’s format.

Input tax credit mismatches

Compare GSTR-2B with the purchase register, group mismatches by supplier, and draft follow-up emails for the accounts payable team.

Cash flow and working capital

Analyse debtor and creditor ageing from Tally or Zoho exports and summarise collection risks by customer segment for treasury.

Audit query responses

Organise auditor requests, map each to supporting schedules in the close folder, and draft response notes for controller sign-off.

Multi-entity consolidation notes

Summarise intercompany balances across Indian and GCC entities and highlight eliminations that do not match before consolidation.

FAQ

Claude for Finance Teams Training — questions

We recommend anonymised or sample extracts during the session unless your organisation has an approved Claude Team or Enterprise plan and internal sign-off. We discuss data classification at the start, so participants know which reports are safe to use and which need masking before they go anywhere near an AI tool.
Yes. Exercises can use GSTR-2B reconciliations for Indian entities and VAT workings for UAE or Saudi entities, depending on who attends. Claude helps with matching, exception lists and drafting, but tax positions stay with your tax team or advisers, and we teach participants to treat outputs as working papers, not advice.
No. In practice it removes much of the formatting, first-draft writing and data tidying that eats analyst time. Judgement on accounting treatment, forecast assumptions and what goes to the board stays with people. The training is built around a human reviewing every number Claude produces before it moves on.
Cowork and the Excel add-in are available on paid Claude plans. For a finance function handling sensitive data, Team or Enterprise plans are usually the right fit because of admin controls and data handling terms. We can explain the differences, but the purchase decision and contract sit with your organisation and Anthropic.
Claude does not need a direct integration to help. Most teams export reports from Tally Prime, Zoho Books or SAP to Excel or CSV and work from those files. Where your organisation has approved connectors, we show how they fit, but the core workflow relies on exports your team already produces.
