Claude Cowork Guide

How to Use Claude Cowork: A Practical Guide

Claude Cowork is the agentic mode in the Claude desktop app. Instead of answering one prompt at a time, it plans and carries out multi-step work on files you share. This guide walks through setup, briefing a task, checking results, and extending Cowork with connectors, plugins and Skills.

Overview

Getting started with Cowork, step by step

1. Install and sign in. Cowork runs in the Claude desktop app for Windows and macOS on paid Claude plans. Install the app, sign in with your work account, and switch to Cowork mode.

2. Grant folder access deliberately. Cowork only works on folders you choose. Create a dedicated working folder per task, such as Q3-board-pack, and copy in just the files needed. Avoid granting your whole drive.

3. Brief it like a capable colleague. State the goal, the files to use, the output you want and the standards to follow. For example: “Using the sales exports in this folder, build an Excel summary by region and month, then write a one-page note on the three biggest changes. Do not alter the source files.”

4. Review the plan before it runs. Cowork sets out the steps it intends to take. Correct misunderstandings here; it is far cheaper than fixing a finished deliverable.

5. Check the output properly. Open the files it creates. Recalculate key numbers, read the reasoning, and ask it to show which source each figure came from.

Going further

  • Connectors link Cowork to tools such as email, calendars, document stores and CRMs through the Model Context Protocol, subject to admin approval.
  • Plugins bundle connectors, commands and instructions for a role, such as finance or sales.
  • Skills package your house style and procedures, so a recurring task runs the same way each time.

6. Agree team rules. On Team and Enterprise plans, admins can control who uses which connectors, set spend limits and review usage analytics. Decide what data classes are allowed before scaling.

If you want your team doing this confidently on their own work, our Cowork training covers each step with live exercises.

Highlights

Cowork tips that save the most time

One folder per task

Keep each job in its own folder with only the files needed, which improves focus and limits data exposure.

Describe the finished output

Say exactly what you want back: file type, structure, length and audience, not just the topic.

Approve the plan first

Read Cowork’s proposed steps and correct them before execution, especially for multi-file or multi-hour tasks.

Verify with sources

Ask Cowork to reference which file and cell or page each key figure or claim came from.

Turn repeats into Skills

When you brief the same task twice, capture the instructions as a Skill so it runs consistently.

Protect originals

Tell Cowork not to modify source files, and keep backups of anything important before a large task.

In your workflow

A first Cowork task to try today

Create a folder with three recent customer feedback exports. Open Cowork, grant access to that folder only, and ask for a spreadsheet tagging each comment by theme and sentiment, plus a one-page summary with the top five issues and example quotes. Review the plan, let it run, then spot-check twenty rows against the originals before sharing the summary with your team.

Use it for

Good first tasks for Cowork

Spreadsheet consolidation

Merge monthly exports from several branches into one clean workbook with consistent columns and a summary sheet.

Deck from documents

Turn a set of reports and notes into a structured presentation draft with key points and suggested charts.

Document comparison

Compare two versions of a policy or contract and produce a table of changes with a plain-language summary.

Inbox and meeting prep

With an approved email or calendar connector, gather context for tomorrow’s meetings into a single briefing note.

Desk research pack

Read a folder of PDFs and articles and produce a summary with citations back to each source document.

Process documentation

Turn rough notes and screenshots of a process into a standard operating procedure in your template.

FAQ

How to Use Claude Cowork: A Practical Guide — questions

In chat, you prompt and Claude replies one turn at a time. In Cowork, you describe an outcome and Claude plans and carries out several steps itself, working directly on files in folders you grant, then returns finished deliverables such as spreadsheets, documents or decks.
Cowork is available on paid Claude plans through the desktop app. Team and Enterprise plans add admin features such as role-based access, group spend limits, per-connector controls and usage analytics. Check Anthropic’s current plan pages for the latest details, as features change frequently.
Cowork can only work on folders you grant. Good practice is a dedicated folder per task containing only what is needed, no sensitive data beyond what your organisation’s policy allows, and backups of important originals. Follow your company’s rules on which plan and data classes are approved.
Plugins bundle connectors, commands and instructions into a package for a role or workflow. Skills are reusable instructions and resources that teach Claude how your organisation does a specific task, such as a report format. Both help teams get consistent results without re-explaining every time.
No. Cowork is designed for non-engineering work, and most of its use comes from functions such as finance, operations, marketing and HR. You describe what you want in plain language. Coding knowledge helps only if you want to build custom connectors or more technical Skills.
