Perth and WA

Why Copilot training in Perth needs a WA lens

Perth runs on a different clock and a different economy from the east coast. Western Australia keeps AWST (UTC+8) all year, with no daylight saving, so a 9 am session in Sydney is 7 am here for half the year and 6 am for the other half. Generic Copilot webinars timed for Sydney or Melbourne rarely fit a Perth day, and they almost never fit a roster that splits people between a St Georges Terrace office and a Pilbara or Goldfields site.

The work is different too. Perth is home to the head offices of large resources and energy companies and a deep mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector. The State public sector, the universities (UWA, Curtin, Murdoch and Edith Cowan among them) and WA’s health service providers employ thousands more, and the CBD carries the legal, engineering, accounting and consulting firms that serve them. Most of these organisations already live inside Microsoft 365: Outlook for the inbox, Teams for meetings and site calls, SharePoint for procedures and contracts, Excel for almost everything else.

That is why Copilot is often the first AI tool a Perth organisation switches on. It is also why the first few months can disappoint. People are given a licence, try a few prompts, get a generic answer and go back to old habits. The gap is rarely the tool; it is knowing which tasks suit Copilot, how to point it at the right file or meeting, and how to check what it produces before it goes to a client, a regulator or a site supervisor.

The course

What Copilot training covers in 2026

Microsoft has renamed and repackaged Copilot several times, so the first job in any session is to make sure everyone knows which Copilot they actually have. The points below were checked against Microsoft Learn in October 2026; licence terms change, so confirm the details with your Microsoft licensing partner before you buy.

Copilot Chat and the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence

Microsoft Copilot ChatMicrosoft 365 Copilot licence

AgentsCan use agents your organisation providesAccess to advanced agents, including Copilot Cowork where enabled
Data protectionEnterprise data protection for work accountsEnterprise data protection, plus existing Microsoft 365 permissions and labels

Inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, Microsoft now shows a label so people can tell what they have: Copilot Chat (Basic), Microsoft 365 Copilot (Basic) or Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium). We check which labels your groups see before the session, because the exercises differ. Microsoft’s newer documents sometimes call the licensed experience simply “Microsoft Copilot”; it is the same product.

Copilot in the apps your Perth staff use every day

  • Outlook: summarise threads, draft and refine replies, and ask questions across recent email and meetings.
  • Teams: catch up on a meeting you missed, ask what was decided and who owns each action, and summarise a busy channel.
  • Excel: ask questions of a table, get formula and chart suggestions, and find outliers, then verify against the source.
  • Word: draft from existing files, rewrite for a different reader and summarise long documents.
  • PowerPoint: build a deck from a document, add speaker notes and summarise a deck someone sent you.

Agents: Copilot Studio and Copilot Cowork

Copilot Studio is Microsoft’s low-code studio for building agents and automated workflows, connecting them to your data and publishing them to Teams, Microsoft Copilot or a website. How an agent is billed depends on how it is built, so we cover licensing and cost controls with the people who will build. Copilot Cowork lets a licensed user describe a multi-step job, such as preparing for a meeting or drafting and sending an update, and it carries out the steps. It needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, must be enabled by your administrators with usage-based billing switched on, and asks for approval before it sends an email, posts in Teams or books a meeting. Microsoft notes that Cowork can optionally use Anthropic models as a subprocessor, which is a point for your privacy review.

Credentials, if your people want one

Our sessions are practical and do not include a Microsoft exam. Staff who want a formal credential can follow on with Microsoft’s own learning paths and certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional (AB-730) for business users or Microsoft 365 Certified: Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals (AB-900) for administrators.

Skills

What your Perth staff will be able to do

Clear an inbox in Outlook

Summarise long threads, draft replies in your own tone and pull actions out of email chains with contractors and suppliers.

Run better Teams meetings

Ask Copilot what was decided, who owns what and what was missed, then send a recap people can act on.

Analyse data in Excel

Ask questions of a table, get formula suggestions and spot trends, then check each figure against the source sheet.

Draft from your own files

Build a first draft in Word from procedures, reports and notes in SharePoint or OneDrive, with the sources named.

Turn documents into decks

Create a PowerPoint outline from a Word report, then tighten the story and the numbers before anyone presents it.

Know when to build an agent

Recognise a repeat task worth an agent in Copilot Studio, and when a saved prompt does the job just as well.

Worked example

A Perth METS firm’s weekly site report, rebuilt with Copilot

Picture a Perth engineering services firm with crews on several mine sites. Every Monday a project coordinator in the city office builds the client report by hand: she reads the shift notes emailed from site, scrolls back through the Teams channel, copies hours and equipment downtime from an Excel tracker and writes a paragraph for each site. It takes most of the morning.

In the session she works on last week’s real material, with personal details removed. In Outlook, Copilot summarises the shift-note emails by site. In Teams, she asks it to list the open issues raised in the channel and who owns them. In Excel, Copilot highlights the sites where downtime rose against the previous week. She then asks Copilot in Word to draft the report from those three outputs, using last month’s report as the layout. She checks every number against the tracker, rewrites two sentences that overstated a delay and saves the prompts as a checklist for next Monday.

More examples

Three more ways Perth teams use Copilot

A State agency briefing note

A policy officer in a WA government department needs a two-page briefing note on a draft regulation. In the session she asks Copilot in Word to summarise the consultation paper and the three submissions saved in the team’s SharePoint library, then to draft the note in the agency’s template. She checks each quoted figure against the source, removes a paragraph that guessed at the Minister’s position and records in the file that the first draft was AI-assisted, as her agency’s guidance asks.

A university research office’s grant tracker

A research administrator keeps an Excel workbook of grant applications with deadlines, faculties and status. Copilot in Excel lists applications due in the next 30 days, groups them by faculty and drafts reminder emails in Outlook for each lead researcher. Before anything is sent, she confirms the dates against the funding body’s website, because the tracker, not Copilot, is the source of truth.

A Perth law firm’s matter catch-up

A senior associate returns from leave to forty emails and two missed Teams meetings on a construction dispute. With a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence he asks Copilot to summarise what happened on the matter, list the deadlines mentioned and draft a short note to the partner. He opens each source email before relying on the summary, and keeps privileged advice out of any agent that others can use.

Each example follows the same pattern we teach: give Copilot the right sources, ask for a specific output, check it against the originals and keep a person accountable for what goes out.

Who it helps

Perth teams that get the most from Copilot training

Professional services in the CBD

Client emails, file notes, proposal drafts and engagement summaries for legal, accounting, engineering and consulting firms.

Formats

How Copilot training runs for Perth teams

Every format is live and hands-on, scheduled on AWST and built around copies of your own documents, meetings and spreadsheets.

Live online on AWST

Two 3-hour sessions or one full day, timed for Perth mornings so office and site staff can join together. Onsite delivery can be discussed for larger groups.

Role-based tracks

Separate streams for executives, managers, administrators and analysts, so each group practises on the tasks it actually does.

Copilot Studio builder group

A smaller follow-on session for the few people who will design, test and govern agents for everyone else.

Sample agenda

A typical Perth Copilot day, on AWST

This is the agenda we start from for a mixed group of managers and administrators. We adjust it after the scoping call, and we usually split it into two 3-hour mornings so site-based staff can attend.

Time (AWST)Session
8:30Which Copilot do I have? Copilot Chat versus the paid licence, the labels in your apps, what Copilot can and cannot see.
9:15Prompting that works at work. Goal, context, source and format; referencing a file, meeting or person; asking Copilot to show its sources.
10:00Outlook and Teams. Thread summaries, reply drafts, meeting recaps and action lists from your own (de-identified) examples.
11:00Word and PowerPoint. Drafting from existing files, rewriting for a different reader and turning a report into a deck.
12:00Break
12:30Excel. Questions of a table, formulas, charts and outliers, with a checking routine for every number.
1:30Agents and Cowork. Using the agents your organisation provides, what Copilot Cowork can do where it is enabled, and when to ask for a Copilot Studio agent.
2:15Safe use. What not to put in a prompt, sensitivity labels, oversharing in SharePoint and Teams, and checking before sending.
3:00Your own task. Each person completes one real task from their week and leaves with a saved prompt sheet.

For leadership teams we run a shorter briefing on adoption, licence decisions and measurement. For the builder group, a separate session covers Copilot Studio design, testing, publishing and governance.

Privacy

Copilot, the Privacy Act and WA rules, in general terms

Copilot works inside your Microsoft 365 tenant and respects the permissions people already have. That is reassuring, but it also means Copilot can surface anything a person can technically open, including files that were overshared years ago. Good training makes the privacy rules practical. The points below are general information, not legal advice; your privacy officer or lawyer should confirm what applies to you.

  • The Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) govern how most private-sector organisations and Australian Government agencies collect, use, disclose and secure personal information. Using Copilot does not change those obligations.
  • OAIC guidance. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner’s Guidance on privacy and the use of commercially available AI products recommends due diligence before adopting a tool, privacy by design, keeping personal and especially sensitive information out of publicly available AI tools, checking outputs for accuracy and telling people when AI is used.
  • Automated decisions. Amendments to the Privacy Act add transparency requirements for decisions made with computer programs that use personal information and could significantly affect someone. They apply from 10 December 2026, so organisations planning agents in Copilot Studio should check whether any use is caught.
  • WA State agencies now have their own privacy law, the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA), most of which commenced on 1 July 2026, alongside agency AI policies and guidance from the Office of Digital Government.
  • Health information carries extra sensitivity. Healthcare teams should keep patient-identifying details out of prompts unless their organisation has approved the use.

In practice we teach five habits: use your work account, never a personal one; de-identify before you paste; label sensitive files; report overshared sites rather than exploiting them; and check every output before it leaves your desk.

Engagement

How a Perth Copilot engagement works

1. Free call (30 minutes). We ask which licences your people hold, which teams come first and what they spend their week on. If you are not sure whether staff have Copilot Chat only or a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, we show you how to check.

2. Short scoping note. You receive a one-page plan: groups, format, dates on AWST and the tasks each group will practise. Quotes are fixed and in Australian dollars (AUD).

3. Preparation with your sample files. Your project lead shares a few de-identified emails, a meeting recording or transcript, a spreadsheet and a report. We turn them into exercises, so nobody practises on made-up data.

4. Live sessions. Short demonstrations, then people do the task themselves on their own licence while the trainer helps. Every exercise ends with a check: what Copilot got right, what it missed and how to fix the prompt.

5. Follow-up. A prompt sheet for each role, a short list of rules for checking outputs and a review call a few weeks later to see which habits stuck and what to tackle next.

FAQ

Copilot training in Perth: your questions answered

Microsoft Copilot Chat is included with eligible Microsoft 365 work accounts and is mainly grounded in the web and the files you give it, with extra inbox and calendar grounding in Outlook. The paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence lets Copilot reason across the email, meetings, chats and files you can already access, with priority access and advanced agents. Checked against Microsoft Learn, October 2026.
Yes, because most of the value comes from habits rather than the licence. Staff who know how to point Copilot at the right source, ask for a specific output and check the result get far more from Copilot Chat, and you get better evidence before deciding who needs a paid licence.
Most people are productive after one full day or two 3-hour sessions, provided they practise on their own work. Builders who will create agents in Copilot Studio need an extra session and a few weeks of guided practice.
Yes. Sessions are scheduled on Australian Western Standard Time (UTC+8), which does not change with daylight saving, so morning sessions suit both CBD staff and people on site rosters.
Our standard format is live online on AWST, which lets office and site staff join together. Onsite delivery at your Perth office can be discussed for larger groups during the scoping call.
Yes. We split sessions into shorter blocks timed around rosters and give each person a prompt sheet so they can practise between swings.
Copilot works within your Microsoft 365 tenant, respects existing permissions and applies enterprise data protection to work accounts. The main practical risk is oversharing: if a file is open to everyone, Copilot can surface it. We cover sensitivity labels and safe prompting, and recommend your IT team reviews sharing settings before a wide rollout.
The Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles still govern how personal information is collected, used and disclosed when staff use Copilot. The OAIC’s AI guidance recommends due diligence, privacy by design and keeping sensitive information out of public AI tools. This is general information, not legal advice.
Yes. Sessions can be aligned with your agency’s AI policy, records requirements and the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA). We use de-identified samples and avoid anything your agency has not approved for use with Copilot.
Copilot Studio is Microsoft’s low-code studio for building agents and workflows that connect to your data and can be published to Teams, Microsoft Copilot or a website. Typical first agents answer questions from a policy library or guide staff through a standard process.
Copilot Cowork lets a licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot user hand over a multi-step task, such as preparing for a meeting or drafting a report, and it carries out the steps. It must be enabled by administrators, uses usage-based billing and asks for approval before sending email, posting or scheduling.
Microsoft offers credentials such as Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional (AB-730) and Microsoft 365 Certified: Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals (AB-900). Our sessions are practical and do not include an exam, but they prepare people well for Microsoft’s learning paths.
A Microsoft 365 work account with Copilot Chat or a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, the desktop or web versions of Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and two or three de-identified work examples. We tell you exactly what to prepare after the scoping call.
We quote a fixed fee in Australian dollars after a short call, based on group size, the number of sessions and how much material we prepare from your own documents. Microsoft licence costs are separate and come from your Microsoft licensing partner.
