How this list was made

We also checked whether courses deal with Commonwealth privacy obligations, and whether they reflect the government's guidance on safe and responsible AI.

Checklist: picking a Generative AI trainer in Australia

Australia's SME focus and responsible GenAI adoption

Canberra's AI Adopt Program is built around adoption rather than invention. It backs up to five AI Adopt Centres that give small and medium businesses a starting point for safe, responsible AI, with advice and specialist training on offer. Each centre can draw A$3 million to A$5 million across four years, covering as much as half its eligible spending, and eligible SMEs can already approach them. That public effort sits alongside rising private demand for team training.

That private market is broad. Specialist firms such as The AI Training Company and KLIQ Interactive run practical team workshops, Nexacu and Odyssey Training offer short public courses, and the University of Sydney provides university-backed foundations. Privacy shapes the content too: the Privacy Act and its APPs frame what staff should keep out of AI tools, so most good courses now include a module on data handling.

FAQ

Questions

AI Adopt Centres offer guidance and specialist training to eligible small and medium businesses exploring responsible AI. What each centre provides, and who qualifies, differs, so contact the relevant centre directly. Many SMEs use that support to understand their options, then add private, hands-on training for their own teams and tools.
Under the Privacy Act and its APPs, many organisations carry duties over how personal information is used and disclosed, and a prompt to an unapproved tool can count. Training should show staff what personal information looks like in everyday documents, which tools are approved and how to check outputs. Your privacy officer should confirm local rules.
Both work. Live online delivery suits teams spread across states and time zones, while face-to-face sessions in Sydney or Melbourne can help with leadership groups. Many organisations open with a day in the room and follow it with shorter virtual labs. What matters most is hands-on practice with real work rather than slides and demonstrations.
Start with the tools your organisation already licenses. Many Australian employers use Microsoft 365, so Copilot often features, while others use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A good programme teaches transferable prompting and review skills, then applies them to your specific tools so staff can use them straight away.
Team size, course length, delivery format and the amount of material built around your own work all move the number. A seat on a public short course and a custom in-house programme are not comparable purchases. Rather than quoting fees here, we suggest sending one brief to several providers and setting their written proposals side by side.
